New Music: Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra - Take Away These Early Grave Blues

Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra is an offshoot of Godspeed You Black Emperor! so there is a good chance they may be nominated for the Polaris music prize later this year. If that's the case don't count on them showing up for the ceremony, just like last year. If the songs on their forthcoming new album  Fuck Off Get Free We Pour Light On Everything is anything like their new single "Take Away These Early Grave Blues" they are a lock for a nomination. Unlike, Godspeed these guys have actual lyrics and there is no post rock here, just pure loud as hell proto-punk. Listen below:

New Music: Holograms- Mediations

It's not often these days that you hear a band that sounds like late seventies/early eighties English punk - most punk rock bands these days are either hardcore, garage punk or pop punk. Holograms are different, and maybe with the help of like minded band Savages they will bring this form of punk rock back into the forefront. Their newest track, "Mediations", sounds like Pink Flag era Wire. Listen below:

New Music: The Julie Ruin- Oh Come On

Original Riot Grrrls Kathleen Hanna and Kathi Wilcox of the band Bikini Kill have gotten back together under the guise of the new group The Julie Ruin.

Their new single, the hard charging punk song "Oh Come On" is taken from the band's forthcoming new LP titled Run Fast. The album will be out September 3rd via TJR Records.

New Music: Colleen Green- Heavy Shit

Colleen Green is poised to be the next thing in stoner indie rock following in the footsteps as such bands as Wavves, Best Coast and FIDLAR. Apparently the poor girl has a lot on her find; however we never find out what it is....it is just "Heavy Shit"!! Download the garage punk song below:

Green will release her debut album, Sock It To Me, on March 19th via Hardly Art.

New Music: Nü Sensae- Throw

Vancouver punkers Nü Sensae will release their first new music since they added guitarist Brody McKnight and expanded to a trio. The vicious screaming lyrics and thumping drum and bass are still present on "Throw", but now with the addition of McKnight's ferocious guitar this band now sounds almost scary. Pretty good though!!! The song will be the B side on split 7' limited release that will also feature a song titled Derek's Song by label mates The Coathangers . The single will be available soon through Suicide Squeeze.

New Music: White Lung- Two Of You + Hunting Holiday

I'm falling in love with the music of Vancouver punk rockers White Lung. The band released a really great album, Sorry, in the summer and I kind of wish I did a post on them earlier this year. Maybe I will do a story about White Lung in one of those re-cap posts where you write about overlooked songs from the past year.

The band recorded a 7" on their recent tour and both songs are now available at Bandcamp for you to stream. The riotous songs, Two of You and Hunting Holiday, remind of the punk of the NorthWest  riot grrrl movement that ruled the 90's indie rock airwaves.

The seven inch is available via Sabotage Records.

Hey!!!... its The Vivian Girls Katy Goodman and her side project La Sera. A word of advice to Katy after watching this video: When your clothes start attacking you, maybe its time to put them in the wash.

Great new Canadian indie rock band and the video for their new single Two Reasons featuring lots of colourful characters including monkeys singing out of their butt.



Poor Moon- Holiday

The indie folk band featuring Christian Wargo and Casey Westcott of Fleet Foxes seem to have a lot more fun with their group Poor Moon. Here, the guys play mental hospital employees who take care of an old guy who just checked in. Is that actor Tom Skerritt?





Die Antwoord- Fatty Boom Boom

I really don't like these guys, but have to admit their music videos are pretty entertaining. Plus the fact they like to shit all over Lady Gaga.




Killer Mike- Reagan

Not sure why rapper Killer Mike is obsessed with Ronald Reagan so much. Maybe he is trying to warn the American people about what might happen in a couple of weeks if they elect Reagan acolyte Mitt Romney. Excellent song and the video features a killer robot.




Off!- Wrong

Finally, watch the ubiquitous Jack Black rip someone's heart out in the music video for the track Wrong from punk super group Off! Blink and you might miss it.

New Music: Fidlar- White On White

Los Angeles band Fidlar have released another great punk rock song that is perfect for a Friday night. We've already heard the band's Thirsty Thursday anthem Cheap Beer and now the group that is affectionately known as Fuck It Dog, Life's A Risk have come out with a hard charging follow up titled White on White. Punk rock at it's best. Listen below:

New Music: Fidlar- Cheap Beer

Here is a new song to get you ready for Saturday night. The L.A. punk band Fidlar have released an ode to drinking cheap beer called, funny enough, Cheap Beer. The song is very appropriate for a Canadian audience. I swear that Canada has the most brands of cheap beer in the world. There is PBR, Labatt 50, and Molson Stock that the hipsters prefer, Laker, Lakeport, Lucky Lager, Carling, Black Ice and Cool that older people love and finally the old standbys Molson Canadian and Coor's Light.... just to name a few.

As for me, my cheap beer drinking days are behind me. When I was younger and living in a small town my preferred choice of drink was Molson Canadian (Don't laugh!!!). When I moved to Toronto I saw the error of my ways and refined my drinking tastes. Now I don't mind paying extra to buy better tasting beer and stick to mostly premiums, imports and locals beers.

On Wednesday Chaep Beer premiered on Pitchfork.  I listened to the track and thought "this was a fun little song" and then quickly forgot about it. The next day the song blew up all over the internet and Pitchfork had re-posted the single declaring it "Best New Track".

I've played the song a few more times and I believe I have fallen for the track. Who could resist the chorus of "I DRINK CHEAP BEER, SO WHAT, FUCK YOU! It's great to hear some indie acts re-establish the drinking song and take the attention away from bong smoking artists like Wavves and Odd Future.

New Music: Crocodiles- Picture My Face (Teenage Head Cover)

San Diego shoegaze band Crocodiles are giving away a left over track from their Endless Flowers sessions. The song is a cover of Teenage Head's Picture My Face.

Teenage Head are arguably the best punk rock group to ever come out of Canada. The band started in Hamilton Ontario in 1975 and are still playing shows today despite the fact original member Frankie Venom died of throat cancer in 2008.

Crocodiles perform a pretty faithful rendition of the track. Download below via Soundcloud.

New Music- Comanechi Major Move

Yes!!!! Comanechi has released new music. I have been a huge fan of lead singer Akiko Matsuura  ever since she started drumming with The Big Pink. She has this fun, crazy personality and likes to get naked when she performs. I saw the band perform twice at Toronto's NXNE festival a couple of years ago and was blown away. Akiko was wearing a "barely there" swimsuit and the guitarist, Simon Petrovitch, kicked a monitor over and it landed on my foot.
Akiko also has another band called Pre.

The song is a grunge punk rocker and apparently the video was filmed in Akiko's living room.

Favourite Songs-Art Brut Axel Rose

This is a song that would make the lead singer of Guns 'n Roses very proud. A punk tribute featuring a "fuck you" attitude sung with the heart of Johnny Rotten era Sex Pistols. Eddie Argos' spoken word delivery never sounded better. The song is taken from the 2011 album Brilliant! Tragic! which was produced by Frank Black.
