The Call were a post punk new wave band from California who had a nice career from 1980 to 1990 releasing a total of seven great albums. The band was led by Michael Been who previously worked the group Lovecraft in the late 60's, the remnants of the seminal psychedelic band H.P. Lovecraft.
Michael Been was also the father of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club member Robert Been. Sadly the elder Been died of a heart attack in 2010, backstage at the Pukkelpop festival in Belgium where he was working as a sound engineer for B.R.M.C.
As noted in an earlier post Robert Been has paid homage to his father on the new B.R.M.C album, Specter At The Feast, by recording a cover of the Call's number 1 Alternative Rock hit "Let The Day Begin." Now comes news the The Call will be reuniting for two shows in California on April 18th and 19th. All original members will be back, along with Robert Been stepping in for his father on bass and vocals. For more information check out the The Calls' website.
I can't recall "Let The Day Begin" being a big hit in Canada (even though it was Al Gore's campaign song), but I do remember in 1987 the song "Everywhere I Go" having massive airplay on the local alternative radio station here in Toronto. The band were often compared to U2 just on the basis of this one song, which was probably because the track featured both Jim Kerr of Simple Minds and Peter Gabriel on backing vocals.
